Steal the Show Comedy: Humour is the key to understanding other cultures, languages and worldviews
Meet Steal the Show Comedy — an organization that develops stand-up comedy in English in Moscow, puts on regular open mics and other shows, and brings professional foreign comedians to Russia.
We’ve talked to the guys and discovered why Moscow needs stand-up in English, how the audience and the comedians can find their events, what is the level of English required to attend, does stand-up help improve your English at all, and much more!

Steal the Show Comedy co-founders have been organizing stand-up events for a few years, and in August-September 2019 they created a new organization and started their work as «Steal the Show». Comedians who perform at the shows are from different countries — expats who live in Moscow, visiting comedians and, of course, locals.
We try to give the comedians more opportunities to progress through a clear structure of open and „closed“ mics, as well as paid shows. We also want to give the audience an opportunity to discover more about stand-up in English, to see different formats and foreign stars live in their hometown. Moreover, we are aiming to build an open international community around it, like a platform for people with common interests and outlook
WHERE AND WHEN DOES ENGLISH STAND-UP TAKE PLACE IN MOSCOW?
Steal the show puts on three types of regular events every week. Steal the Show’s base is at RUIN bar at Teatralnaya metro station, but events take place at other venues as well.
- Every Wednesday — Open Mic at 8 PM, at Down House Bar on Kitay-Gorod metro station. To perform, a person just needs to repost the event on any of their socials (links below) and come a bit in advance to sign up with the host. There are ten performance spots, first come — first serve. Entry is free.
- Every Friday — Friday night stand-up (closed mic/new material night). Experienced comedians can come to test new material, and newcomers get spots if they do well on Wednesdays. Entry is based on tips — you can leave any paper note in the bucket, depending on what you think the show is worth.
- Every Saturday — special shows, where different show formats take turns. Some of those haven’t been done in Russia at all, let alone in English. Entry to those events costs 200-300 rub.
Namely, we have put on the first Roast Battle in English in Russia, after getting a „blessing“ from Brian Moses himself, a person who invented the current RB format; tried an interesting format from Berlin, where in the first half comedians perform sober, and in the second half — drunk (and it went down amazing); organized the first storytelling show in English, there are also improvisational formats. Or sometimes it’s just a stand-up showcase with 3-4 people doing tested longer sets
What’s more, twice a week the guys hold writing sessions and topical workshops (e.g. hosting the show, crowdwork, joke structure etc).
VISITING HEADLINERS FROM ABROAD
Steal the Show doesn’t just provide a platform for local comics, but every month they bring professional foreign comedians to Russia. The last Comedy Stars show featured Marjolein Robertson from Scotland, and another Scottish comedian, Stephen Carlin, is coming very soon, on 2 November.
Bringing foreign headliners is a very specific part of our activity. Our name is „Steal the Show“ for a reason — this expression is used in a situation when an underdog of whom nobody expects anything, suddenly wins or becomes the center of attention. This name shows that we’re mostly about nurturing local talent, giving young comedians opportunities and developing demand on the local market, so there wouldn’t be a situation when there’s nothing going on locally, just once a year some big foreign stars come and people go to see them just because it’s a face off the TV or Netflix
Contacts with foreign comedians are usually established through Igor Mondae’s connections in Central and Eastern Europe, and Oleg Denisov’s — in the UK and Scandinavia. Oleg has performed full solo show runs at three Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, and has toured Europe a lot in the last year. He took notice of the fact that local markets of English stand-up are growing steadily almost everywhere, especially in Northern and Eastern Europe. Steal the Show team aims to maintain and grow the demand and the community of comedy lovers.
Foreign headliners (or Steal the Show’s Comedy Stars) are chosen not just according to their qualifications, there is a certain philosophy behind it. For example, there are comedians whose live performances give the audience much stronger emotional experience than they would on video, and for obvious reasons they’re not as popular as the ones featuring on TV, even though their level of skill is not at all lower, it’s just a bit different.
We want our Comedy Stars to represent different styles and approaches, and some „alternative“ style even benefits them, because it makes the difference: crowds begin to understand the importance of seeing a show live, which is what stand-up is all about. It’s a very special experience and different sort of comedy from overly polished or hollowed out humor you can see on TV
In October a young female comedian, Marjolein Robertson performed in Saint Petersburg and Moscow with Steal the Show. She comes from a tiny island in Scotland, but is quite well-known already on the BBC Scotland and comedy festivals.
For Marjolein it was the first performance outside the English-speaking world, but the result was an absolute bliss and ovation every 2-3 minutes. And we’re happy not just because we could bring a comedian and sell out the show, but because we promoted it well, aiming at the public which would enjoy it and this public is now regularly attending our weekly shows

The next headliner is Stephen Carlin, a comedian with 25 years of experience, whose work is regularly praised by Stewart Lee himself. Like Marjolein, he will perform at HopHead in Saint Petersburg on Nov 1, and then in Chagal club and restaurant in Moscow, on Nov 2.

We will expand our geography of comedians, although it’s obvious that mostly the comedians will come from UK or Europe because flying from the USA just for our shows would not make financial sense. But then again, the nationality is not as crucial to us as is style and craft
Foreign comedians come to Russia not because of money — the fee they take home after all the travel expenses is not so big. But many are attracted by the opportunity to see our country, and also the line in the CV «performed a solo show in Moscow» can raise some eyebrows and make a comedian a bit more interesting on the market.
JIM GAFFIGAN — MAIN HEADLINER OF THE SEASON
Arrival of big Western comedians to Russia has become a trend of this season. In early October Dara O’Briain, one of top Irish comedians, performed in Moscow and Saint Petersburg; on the 23rd of November Daniel Sloss, the rising star of international comedy, will drop by Moscow too, and on the 20th of November, Jim Gaffigan, a proper superstar of American stand-up and cinema, will take to the stage of Stand-up Club #1 in Moscow. Steal the Show team has played a major role in his arrival — it is their project together with the Club and their main headliner of the season.

Stand-up Club N1 is the venue for the show, and we are very pleased to be collaborating with them on this project. The opportunity to bring Jim to Moscow arose quite unexpectedly in the middle of the summer holidays, and we needed to organize it and agree on the venue quickly and efficiently. Everyone did their jobs well, so as a result we have the first American top-level comedian ever coming to Moscow
STAND-UP BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER
Our audience can have different levels of English. What’s important to understanding our shows, is the experience of real human interaction, from which humor arises, rather than «book knowledge». Many people who come to our Wednesday Open Mic, are seeing live stand-up for the first time in their lives, while the Friday and Saturday crowds are usually more experienced and international. Even if some of them haven’t seen much live stand-up, they’re used to comedy content in English — watch TV series, like Friends or Rick and Morty without translation, and this really improves their perception of live comedy. In general, any level from Intermediate and upwards will enable you to understand the large part of what’s going on at our shows.
What’s important, even though it’s stand-up comedy, you won’t be ridiculed or bullied by comedians for your level of English. We have a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere at our shows. Moreover, we’re generally convinced (and it’s based on experience) that in terms of „feel good value“ and atmosphere, our comedy shows can give a head start to almost every stand-up in Russian which happens in Moscow
The audience of English stand-up in Moscow consists of not only Russians, but foreigners too (expats and tourists). Sometimes there are just a few of them in the audience, sometimes over 50%. Steal the Show welcomes comedians and audience members from USA, Canada, Australia, Europe, India, Middle East, South America etc. They all have a different outlook on life, and the comedians from different cultures vary in their material and delivery. It’s not just about the jokes in the end, it’s about cultural exchange. Regular audience members of Steal the Show often become part of the community and make friends.
Stand-up comedy is not just the form of performance art, which is the closest to everyday speech, but also it’s the closest one to the real human thinking, with all its paradoxes and secret thoughts which are often not even pronounced out loud. We believe that humor is the key to understanding other cultures, languages and worldviews. Usually when we have 10 comedians performing, they represent 7-8 different nationalities

Мы поговорили с ребятами и узнали, зачем нужен стендап на английском в Москве, как и на какие регулярные мероприятия можно попасть зрителям и комикам, какой нужен уровень английского, помогает ли стендап в его изучении и еще о многом другом.
В основной команде три человека: Олег Денисов, Олеся Крижановская и Игор Мондэй.
Ребята из Steal the Show на протяжении нескольких лет организовывали стендап-мероприятия, а в августе-сентябре этого года они создали объединение и начали активную работу. На сцену проекта выходят комики из разных стран, которые живут в Москве или заезжают в гости, а также российские комики.
Мы стараемся дать комикам больше возможностей прогрессировать через четкую структуру открытых и закрытых микрофонов и платных шоу. Зрителям же хотим дать возможность лучше разбираться в стендапе на английском, видеть вживую разные форматы и интересных гостей из-за рубежа, а не просто одно английское шоу или опен майк в неделю. Ну и также стараемся построить вокруг этого некоторое открытое международное сообщество людей с общими интересами
ГДЕ И КОГДА ПРОХОДИТ АНГЛИЙСКИЙ СТЕНДАП В МОСКВЕ?
Steal the Show проводит три типа регулярных мероприятий в неделю. База «Steal the show» — RUIN Bar на Театральной, но мероприятия проводятся и на других площадках.
- Каждую среду — открытый микрофон в 20:00 в Down House Bar на Китай-Городе. Чтобы выступить, достаточно сделать репост в одной из соцсетей (ссылки в конце) и прийти заранее — чтобы записаться у ведущего. Первые 10 записавшихся выступают.
- В пятницу — Friday Night stand-up (закрытый микрофон). Там опытные комики могут приходить с новым материалом, а новички — если хорошо проявят себя по средам. Вход для зрителей — любая бумажная купюра.
- По субботам — «особые шоу», где чередуются разные форматы, в том числе те, которые в России еще никто не делал (тем более на английском). Вход на эти мероприятия 200-300 рублей.
В частности, мы провели первый Roast Battle на английском в России, получив „мандат“ у основателя жанра Брайана Мозеса; попробовали интересный формат из Берлина, когда комики выступают в первой половине трезвыми, а во второй максимально пьяными (и это было прекрасно); первыми сделали сторителлинг на английском, есть импровизационные форматы. Или просто стендап-концерт на 3-4 человека с проверенными длинными монологами
Кроме того, два раза в неделю объединение проводит разгоны или мастерские для комиков на определенную тему: ведение шоу, как общаться с публикой, как писать короткие шутки и т. п.
ВЫСТУПЛЕНИЯ ИНОСТРАННЫХ КОМИКОВ
Steal the Show не только дает площадку для выступлений на английском в Москве, но и каждый месяц привозит в Россию зарубежных комиков. Недавно выступила Мэриолейн Робертсон из Шотландии, а 2 ноября приедет еще один шотландский комик — Стивен Карлин.
Привоз хедлайнеров из-за рубежа раз в месяц — это особая, в большей степени медийная история. Наше название не случайно „Steal the Show“ — это выражение используется для случаев когда „темная лошадка“, от которой ничего не ждут, неожиданно побеждает и оказывается в центре внимания. Оно показывает, что мы все же ориентированы на внутренний рынок и создание условий для молодых комиков, чтобы не было ситуации, когда внутреннего рынка нет, но приезжают звезды из-за рубежа раз в год и люди идут на них просто потому что это лицо из телика или „Нетфликса“
Приглашать комиков помогают знакомства Игора Мондея в Центральной и Восточной Европе и Олега Денисова в Британии и Скандинавии. Олег выступал на трех фестивалях «Фриндж» в Эдинбурге и много гастролировал по Европе в последний год. Он отмечает, что внутренние рынки стендапа на английском растут практически везде, особенно в Северной и Восточной Европе. Команда Steal the Show хочет поддержать спрос и нарастить сообщество любителей.
Хедлайнеров для шоу в Москве выбирают не только по уровню квалификации. На этот счет у организаторов своя философия. Например, есть комики, которые вживую воспринимаются гораздо лучше, чем на видео, и по понятным причинам они менее популярны, хотя по уровню как минимум не ниже медийных.
Хочется, чтобы они представляли разные стили и подходы, причем определенная альтернативность идет даже в плюс, потому что это дает разницу: публика понимает ценность того, что они могут видеть такой юмор вживую, что не так актуально в случае с прилизанным, чеканным юмором в телевизоре или на „Нетфликсе“

Для нее это был первый концерт вне англоязычного мира, но в итоге был абсолютный восторг и овации каждые 2-3 минуты. И мы рады, что смогли не только привезти комика и собрать аншлаг, но и продвинуть мероприятие так, чтобы попасть в правильную публику, которая теперь приходит и на регулярные шоу

География будет расширяться, хотя понятно, что базируются они все в Британии или Европе. Из США к нам лететь долго и дорого. Национальность нас интересует в меньшей степени, чем стиль и мастерство
Иностранные комики приезжают в Россию не из-за гонорара — он не такой большой с учетом расходов на поездку. Они остаются в небольшом плюсе, но многих привлекает возможность посетить нашу страну. Ну и запись в резюме «сольное шоу в Москве» добавляет им интересности на рынке.
ДЖИМ ГЭФФИГАН — ХЭДЛАЙНЕР СЕЗОНА
Вообще, приезд западных комиков в Россию — тренд этого года. В начале октября в Москве и Питере выступил один из самых известных ирландских комиков Дара О’Бриэн, 23 ноября в столицу нагрянет восходящая звезда мировой комедии Дэниел Слосс, а 20 ноября на сцену Stand-up Club #1 на новом Арбате в рамках своего тура выйдет американец Джим Гэффиган — это уже топ-класс. В его приезде команда Steal the Show сыграла одну из главных ролей: это совместный проект со Stand-up Club #1 и главный хедлайнер сезона для Steal The Show.

Стендап-клуб — площадка, на которой проводится мероприятие, и мы очень довольны что имеем возможность с ними сотрудничать, так как вариант с концертом в России в рамках Европейского турне Гэффигана у нас возник неожиданно, посреди летних отпусков и фестивалей, и надо было решить вопрос четко и быстро. Все хорошо сработали — и в результате мы имеем, наверное, первого по-настоящему топового американского комика в Москве
СТЕНДАП СБЛИЖАЕТ
Уровень знания английского у зрителей может быть разный. Важен опыт восприятия живой речи и, как следствие, юмора. Многие из тех, кто приходит на открытый микрофон в среду, видят стендап вживую в первый раз, в то время как зрители в пятницу и субботу более опытные. Многие, даже если не смотрели стендап вживую, увлекаются сериалами, смотрят «Друзей» или «Рика и Морти» в оригинале — и это уже очень помогает восприятию. В целом, любой уровень вроде intermediate и выше даст возможность понимать большую часть происходящего.
Главное — хоть это и стендап — никто не будет над вами по-плохому насмехаться из-за уровня английского. У нас очень спокойная и дружелюбная в этом плане атмосфера. Вообще мы убеждены, что в плане „feel good value“ и атмосферы наши мероприятия могут дать фору подавляющему большинству стендапа на русском в Москве
На английский стендап в Москве ходят как россияне, понимающие язык, так и иностранцы: экспаты и туристы — иногда в зале их всего несколько, иногда больше 50%. Выступить или посмотреть стендап приходят люди из США, Канады, Австралии, Европы, Индии, Арабских стран, Южной Америки и т.д. Все они по-разному смотрят на мир, а комики по-разному подают материал. Это не только про шутки, но и про культурный обмен. Постоянные зрители Steal the Show становятся частью сообщества и дружат.
Стендап самый близкий жанр не только к живой речи, но и к живому мышлению — со всеми его парадоксами и мыслями, которые люди могут даже не проговаривать вслух в обычной жизни. Вообще юмор — ключ к пониманию других культур, языков и мировоззрений. У нас часто на 10 комиков 7-8 разных национальностей
